The main idea here is that a switch provides the network interfaces, or switch ports, that end devices plug into. These connectors are what computer, printer, or other device cables attach to in order to join the local network. The number of these ports can vary a lot depending on the switch model—some small switches have just a handful of ports, while enterprise models can have 24, 48, or more.

Each port on a switch is an interface that the switch uses to forward traffic to the correct device. While the ports are all about connectivity, other internal components like RAM, ROM, and flash memory are memory/storage inside the switch used for running software, storing firmware, and keeping configuration. They aren’t the points where devices connect to the network.
